Omentum
Is a mesentery that is attached to the stomach
- creates an apron like appearance
What are the 2 types of omentum?
- Greater omentum
2. Lesser omentum
Greater omentum
A part of the peritoneum that descends from the greater curvature of the stomach and proximal duodenum
Lesser omentum
A fold of peritoneum that goes from the lesser curvature of the stomach and proximal duodenum to the liver
What are 3 functions of the greater omentum?
- Fat storage area
- Immune contribution
- Infection and wound isolation
What does the greater omentum have?
A collection of macrophages
What do macrophages do?
They eat/engulf bacteria and dead cells
Through what process do macrophages eat bacteria?
Phagocytosis
What can the greater omentum limit?
The spread of infection
- can wrap around areas of infection and trauma
What does the lesser omentum connect? (3)
- Lesser curvature of the stomach
- First part of the duodenum
- Hilum of the liver
What 3 ligaments does the greater omentum form?
- Gastrophrenic
- Gastrosplenic
- Gastrocolic
What 2 ligaments does the lesser omentum form?
- Hepatogastric
2. Hepatoduodenal
How is the lesser omentum connected to the greater sac?
Through the foramen of winslow
What is the space behind the lesser omentum and stomach called?
Omental bursa
- or lesser sac
What organs are part of the abdomen cavity, but not apart of the greater sac? (3)
- Pancreas
- Aorta
- Duodenum
