Gastrointestinal Health: Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease Flashcards
Q: What is Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)?
A: GORD is the reflux of gastric juice (HCl, bile, pepsin) back into the oesophagus, commonly causing heartburn. It is associated with transient relaxation or decreased pressure of the lower oesophageal sphincter (LOS).
Q: What are the risk factors for GORD?
A: Risk factors include increased intra-abdominal pressure (obesity, pregnancy), hiatus hernia, large amounts of fatty foods, smoking, alcohol, coffee, peppermint, tomatoes, chocolate, certain medications (calcium channel blockers, NSAIDs), stress, anxiety, and family history.
Q: What is the natural approach to GORD?
A:
Test for H. pylori and consider low stomach acid.
Correct low stomach acid with digestive bitters, ACV, or betaine HCl.
Avoid trigger foods and allergens like wheat.
Follow a Mediterranean diet, eat mindfully, and avoid overeating or eating too close to bedtime.
Elevate the head of the bed when sleeping, avoid lying down after meals, manage stress, and lose weight if necessary.
Q: What are demulcent herbs used for GORD?
Demulcent herbs soothe and coat the oesophageal mucosa. Common examples include:
Slippery elm (2–3 teaspoons daily, mixed in water).
Marshmallow root, liquorice, and meadowsweet.
