Chp 14- Cells of Immune SYstem Flashcards
Leukocytes (WBCs) divided into 2 categories
Granulocytes (granules present) and Agranulocytes (no granules)
Granulocytes Cell Types (The phils)
Neutrophils, Basophils, Eosinophils
activated in initial stages of infection; accumulates at site of injury; quickly phagocytizes bacteria
Neutrophils
granulocyte that releases histamine, involved in inflammation and allergic responses
Basophil (in tissue, these are mast cells)
important in ridding body of parasitic worms; produce toxic proteins against multicellular parasites
eosinophils
Agranulocyte Cell Types
Monocyte, Lymphocyte, Dendritic Cells
agranulocyte that is not active while in blood, but enter into body tissue to mature into macrophages & dendritic cells
monocytes
Monocytes become
macrophages (big eaters/ phagocytic)
phagocytic cell that resides in tissues and removes microbes & damaged cells
Macrophages “big eaters”
Agranulocyte; group of leukocytes involved in adaptive immunity
Lymphocytes
3 Main Lymphocytes
T-cells (80%). B-cells (15%), NK cells (5%)
lymphocyte cells that make antibodies; turns into plasma cells & produces antibodies; involved in adaptive immunity
B cells
lymphocyte cells that mature in thymus; involved in adaptive immunity
T cells
lymphocyte cells that has ability to kill multiple types of cells; releases perforins that perforate membrane; involved in innate immunity
NK cells
Blood consists of 2 parts , ____
formed elements (cell component) and plasma (fluid component)
