ch 4: membranes, nervous + muscle tissue Flashcards
tissue membrane
flat sheet of tissue that covers or lines the body
mucous membrane
- lines body cavities and passageways that open to exterior
- secretes mucus
mucous membrane location and function
- found in digestive, urinary, respiratory tracts- function: lubrication, prevent drying
serous membrane
lines internal cavities of the trunk/body cavities not open to exterior
- secretes lubricating fluid
cutaneous membrane
skin that covers the body
synovial membrane
-lines synovial joint cavities, associate with joints
muscle tissue
tissue thats specialized for contraction and movement
3 types of muscle tissue
skeletal, cardiac, and smooth
skeletal muscle
makes up the large muscles responsible for body movement
- joint movement, maintain posture, generate heat
skeletal muscle characteristic
- multi-nucleated
- striated
- voluntary
cardiac muscle
found only in heart
- circulates blood and maintains blood pressure
cardiac muscle characteristics
-striated
- involuntary
- uninucleated
smooth muscle
found in the walls of blood vessels and around hallow organs
smooth muscle characteristics
-non striated
- involuntary
-uninucleated
nervous tissue
process, receives, and responds to stimuli via electrical signals
neurons
cells that receives and sends messages from the body to the brain and back to the body
dendrites
receives incoming signals
axons
carries outgoing electrical signals to other cells
neuroglia (glial) cells
supports and protects neurons
