What legislation covers animal transport?
Welfare of animals (transport order) 2006
When can animals not be transported?
When they are not fit for the journey - injured, unable to move independently without pain
Have a severe open wound
Pregnant females - last 10% gestation

Why are animal byproducts controlled?
Hygiene
So they dont enter food chain
Prevent pathogens, health is protected

Category 1 - high risk
Category 2 - medium risk
Category 3 - low risk
What are category 3 byproducts?
Aesthetics - wouldnt make you ill
But doesnt look good
Or part of the body that isnt normally eaten
What are category 2 byproducts?
Products that are not for human or animal consumption
What are category 1 byproducts?
Specified risk material
Whole ruminant bodies
Material with TSE
Water drain waste
What counts as bovine specified risk material?
Tonsils
Last 4m of GI tract
Skull, brain and eyes
Spinal cord/vertebral column
What counts as ovine specified risk material?
Skull and spinal cord
Over 12 months - permanent incisors erupted
How are category 1 byproducts identified and treated?
Stained blue and incinerated
What are some examples of category 2 byproducts?
Non-ruminant sludge Contain drug residues Manure Dead animals not slaughtered for human consumption Pathogenic products Whole pig or poultry bodies

Stained black and incinerated
If over 20kg - slashed then dyed

Hide/skin

How are animal byproducts stored?
In leakproof, labelled containers
What is the non-statutory programme?
Samples meats from shops/border inspections to test for substances eg. antibiotics, sex/growth hormones
What is the maximum residue limit?
Max conc of residue accepted by EU
What is the no effect level?
Max dose of a substance that can be consumed without producing detectable ill effects
What is the withdrawal period?
The time between the last dose and when the level of residues is lower than the maximum residue limit
