What does the Netherlands look like?
Hoe ziet Nederland eruit?
From north to south the distance is about 300 kilometers.
Van noord naar zuid is de afstand ongeveer 300 kilometer.
Second, it is a flat country. You will not find mountains here.
Ten tweede: het is een vlak land. Bergen vind je hier niet.
And we are proud of that.
En daar zijn we trots op.
I saw a hotel there called Little Switzerland.

A large part of our country is below sea level.
Een groot deel van ons land ligt onder zeeniveau.
Some pieces of land lie in the sea.
Sommige stukken land liggen in zee.
Rivers run everywhere, ships are everywhere.
Overal lopen rivieren, overal zie je schepen.
But all that water also poses a huge danger.
Maar al dat water vormt ook een enorm gevaar.
If the dikes or dams break, disaster happens.
Als de dijken of dammen breken, gebeurt er een ramp.
The sea level is rising.
Het zeeniveau stijgd.
There is construction everywhere. You can still see some green areas here and there.
Overal wordt gebouwd. Hier en daar zie je nog wel wat groene gebieden.
But they are getting smaller as the villages and towns grow.
Maar die worden steeds kleiner, doordat de dorpen en steden groeien.
Recently the police drove behind me on the road.
Laatst reed de politie achter mij op de weg.
When I saw this I immediately thought: “Oh my, did I do something wrong?”
Toen ik dit zag dacht ik direct:”O, help, deed ik iets verkeerd?”
Strange, isn’t it, that feeling that you’re doing something wrong when you see the police?
Vreemd hé, dat gevoel dat je iets verkeerds doet als je de politie ziet?
Do you cycle without a light? The police will point out the dangers, if you pay a small fine first.
Fiets je zonder licht? De politie wijst je op de gevaren, als je tenminste eerst een kleine boete betaalt.
A cop makes sure your car arrives safely… at the police station!
Een agent zorgt dat je auto veilig aankomt … bij het politiebureau!
I totally agree with that.
Daar ben ik het helemaal mee eens.
The police came right away and were very nice.
De politie kwam meteen en was zeer aardig.
But I hope they resolve the matter soon.
Maar ik hoop dat ze de zaak snel oplossen.
A friend of mine sees that I have to file a report.
Een vriend van me zien dat ik aangifte moet doen.
It seems that every year thousands of stolen bicycles are left at the police station because no one comes to get them.
Het schijnt dat er ieder jaar duizenden gestolen fietsen op het politiebureau blijven staan omdat niemand ze komt halen.

The king and queen visit a certain city every year.
De koning en koningin bezoeken elk jaar een bepaalde stad.
On May 4, we will be silent for two minutes at eight o’clock in memory of the victims of that war.
Op 4 mei zijn we om acht uur twee minuten stil ter herinnering aan de slachtoffers van die oolog.
