• energy from sun causing water in sea to evaporate and turn into water vapour / or water from transpiration
• this warm water vapour is carried upwards and cools/condenses to form clouds
• precipitation from clouds onto land and carried back into sea and provide plants and animals with fresh water

- the pressure causes water molecules to move in opposite direction - high salt concentration to low salt concentration then water is forced through leaving salts behind
