Kinetic theory and density Flashcards
explain the particle arrangement in solids
strong forces of attraction holding close together in regular shape no energy only vibrate around fixed points
fixed shape and volume
explain the arrangement of particles in liquids
forces of attraction are weaker and flow over each other have more kinetic energy and move on random directions and low speeds
explain the arrangement of particles in gas
no forces of attraction more energy in kinetic energy and free to move fast speeds
no fixed shape
what happens when you use thermal heat on substance
energy is transferred to kinetic energy store causing it to move faster and eventually overcome attraction and boil.
in solids vibrate quicker
how can you find density of liquid
use mass balance measure mass of empty measuring cylinder
then measure mass with liquid, difference is mass
volume read of cylinder
how can you find density of irregular shaped solid
submerge in water water displaced = volume of object
using eureka fill till spout
Place an empty measuring cylinder below its spout
Carefully lower the object into the eureka can
Measure the volume of the displaced water in the measuring cylinder
describe the density of solid liquid and gases
solids are most dense as particles most closely packed but gas least as volume changes and far apart
