Atmosphere Earth Flashcards
What is phase 1
volcanoes give out CO2 and Water vapour
what is phase 2
green plants evolved and Oxygen is produced
what is phase 3
ozone layer
now explain the atmosphere evolution
- earth was molten volcanoes occurring releasing CO2 steam methane
- mostly CO2 and Water Vapour
- water vapour condensed into oceans
explain fully phase 2
CO2 dissolved into oceans
N2 formed from ammonia and oxygen and denitrifying bacteria
and green plants formed which remove co2 and produce o2
o2 increases
explain phase 3 fully
build up of o2 caused organisms death allowing evolution of complex organisms
ozone layer created block harmful layers of sun rays so survival
No CO2 left
how did CO2 decrease
water soluble gas, water vapour in Earth’s early atmosphere condensed large amounts of CO2 dissolved in the oceans
Carbonates were precipitated during this process
sea creatures began to appear which used up the carbonates to form shells and skeletons
Green plants and algae began to evolve, absorbed considerable amounts of carbon dioxide during photosynthesis
test for oxygen
glowing splint inside a test tube of gas
If the gas is oxygen the splint will relight
what is the greenhouse effect
- sun gives out electromagnetic radiation
- energy absorbed by greenhouse effect and some re-emmited back greenhouse gases
- some re-emited back into space
- absorption and re-emissions by greenhouses gases keep warm
what is enhanced greenhouse effect
- if concentration of greenhouse gases increases enhanced greenhouse effect.
heat radiation from earth is absorbed and re-emitted causes atmosphere to heat up
why is methane gas an issue
as concentration increases due to human activity such a livestock
increasing amounts is very significant greenhouse gas causing temperature increase ] global warming
how is historical data less accurate than current records
- taken over fewer locations fewer methods may be no methods at all if you go far enough
- you can estimate past data buy analysing ice sheets fossils // less precise
how can we reduce carbon dioxide emissions
cut down greenhouse gases or limit fossil fuels walk instead of driving
