Fertility and Contraception Flashcards
What are the two ways to control infertility
Clomifene therapy and IVF
how clomifene therapy allow a woman to reproduce
woman who don’t ovulate can take a drug called clomifene which increases the production of FSH and LH which stimulate egg maturation and ovulation ( releasing of egg) so a couple can improve the chances of pregnancy by knowing when woman iv ovulating
How does IVF allow fertility
collecting eggs from woman’s ovaries and fertilising them in a lab with males healthy sperm cells which are grown into embryos and places into woman’s uterus ( can be one or two) which improve chances of pregnancy
what hormones are given to woman before IVF
FSH and LH to stimulate egg production
tell me two risks of IVF
low success rate
risk of multiple births as more embryos implanted so risk of miss-carriage
more embryos used than needed so destroy life
explain how a hormones can be used as contraceptives using a example
oestrogen can be used to prevent the release of egg as using it everyday keeps levels permanently high so inhibits the production of FSH therefore after a while egg production and development will stop
how can progesterone be used to reduce fertility
stimulates the production thick cervical mucus which prevents sperm getting to the uterus and fertilisation the egg
how do contraceptive pills work
they are a mixture of progesterone and oestrogen or only progesterone and maintain the uterus lining so development of another egg is prevented
tell me barrier contraceptive methods
condoms and diaphrams
tell me one advantage and one disadvantage of hormonal methods
more effective and bad side effect and don’t protect against STI’s
