Menstrual Cycle Flashcards
what is the menstrual cycle
- monthly events in which a female releases an egg and prepares uterus for fertilisation
day one: menstruation, lining of uterus is broken down
day two: uterus is repaired and thickened for egg to be planted
day three: ovulation egg is released from ovary
day four: lining is maintained from day 14 till 28 incase of fertilisation or uterus lining will break down again
what are the four hormones involved in menstrual cycle
- FSH
- Oestrogen
- LH
- Progesterone
what does the FSH do
- released by pituitary gland it causes the follicle to mature and produces oestrogen
what does oestrogen do
- it is produced in the ovaries it causes lining of the uterus to thicken and grow
cause LH surge
what does LH do
- produced by pituitary gland
releases the egg and remains of follicle develop into corpus luteum which produces progesterone
what does progesterone do
formed by corpus leteum after ovulation
maintains the lining of the uterus
inhibits FSH and LH
THIS CAUSES PROGESTERONE TO FALL and low oestrogen causing uterus lining to break down
low progesterone means FSH is increased so recycle
if egg not fertilised, oestrogen less and menstruate or else progesterone is produced by corpus bc if not pregnant will be prevented
