Mitosis and Cell division Flashcards
What is the process of sexual reproduction
fusion of the nuclei of two gametes to form a zygote (fertilised egg cell) and the production of offspring that are genetically different from each other
what gametes
sex cell with half the number of chromosomes - 23
what happens when gametes fuze
produce a fertilised egg called a zygote which is a diploid and undergoes cell division to develop into a embryo
what are 2 advantages of sexual reproduction
genetic variation - characteristics to survive a environment or adapt to change
leading to natural selection and evolution as they become better adapted
disease less likely spread
what are 2 disadvantages of sexual reproduction
takes time and energy
may be isolated so harder to reproduce
What is asexual reproduction
divide by mitosis and result in diploid daughter cells which are genetically identical to parent cell
what is not needed for asexual reproduction
Only one parent is required so there is no fusion of gametes and no mixing of genetic information
what advantages of asexual reproduction
very quick and fast allow you to increase population very quick
only one parent needed
what are disadvantages of asexual
no genetic variation so if environmental change whole population can be affected
disease more likely to spread
what is meiosis
cell division in reproductive organs to form gametes
what is the importance of meiosis
Increases genetic variation of offspring
