Tissue culture Flashcards
what is the process of tissue culture
cells / tissues are cultured using artificial growth medium
why is the an benefit for plants
whole plants can be grown very easily and usefully using little space and grown all year
What are the plants produced via tissue culture called
clones as they are genetically identical this is good to clone similar beneficial features
what are the steps for tissue culture in plant tissues
parent plant chosen with desired characteristic then a small amount of tissue is removed from parent plant and under aseptic conditions they are transferred to petri dish containing nutrient agar and add hormones and once form platelets can be transferred to potting trays with compost to grow into plants
why are hormones added to petri dish
to encourage the cells of explants to grow
why is it done under aseptic conditions
to prevent the growth of microbes that harm plant
how can u get best results from tissue culture in plants
take tissues from fast growing root or shoot tips
why is this method beneficial
it is cheaper , greater yield produced , any time of year quickly in small space
explain steps of tissue culture in animals
a sample is extracted from animal and enzymes are used to separate cells these cells are placed in culture vessel in with a growth medium for it to grow and multiply into tissues and after several cell division the cells can be split up again for further growth or once grown be stored for future use
why is tissue culture beneficial for medical research
because experiments can be conducted in isolation / study effects of environmental change without negatively affecting organism and causing complications
