Q

explain the common process of selective breeding in animals

A

select animals in stock with desirable characteristics breed them together and select offspring that show desired characteristic and breed them over many generations

Q

explains the problem of selective breeding in regards to gene pool

A

inbreeding causes reduction in gene pool due to closely related plants/animals being bred together which reduces number of alleles in a population.

Q

what does limiting size of gene pool mean

A
  • organism inherit harmful genetic defects

- vulnerable to new diseases as not much variation so less chance in resistant alleles

Q

explain the difference of selective breeding and natural selection

A
  • natural selection is a natural process whilst selective breeding is due to humans
  • natural selection results in development of populations w features better adapted to environment whilst selective breeding results in population w features useful to humans
  • natural selection takes long time while selective breeding is quicker as desired features reproduce
