Q

what does incomplete combustion happen what is carbon monoxide

A

particles bind with red blood cells - haemoglobin- to stop blood from carryinh oxygen around the body

this causes fainting and death

what is soot

A

particles of carbon released into atmosphere and deposit onto ground forming black dust.

makes buildings look dirty , reduces air quality and respiration problems

Q

what is sulphur dioxide

A

made from the sulphur impurities in fossil fuels
mixes with clouds to form sulphuric acid and falls as acid rain
causes lakes to become acidic and plants and animals die
kill trees buildings made of limestone and corrodes metals

Q

what is nitrogen oxides

A

formed by reactions of nitrogen and oxygen in air due to high temperatures/ energy from combustion reactions like in car engines

cause photochemical mog and contribute to acid rain

causing breathing difficulties

Q

Give me 2 advantages of hydrogen as a fuel and 2 disadvantages

A
  • Very clean fuel - only waste product is water
  • no pollutants like fossil fuels
  • renewable resource as obtained from water - done by electrolysis
  • requires a very expensive and special engine
  • manufacturing is expensive and needs energy from other sources may produce pollutants
  • hard to store
