Ventricular Septal Defect Flashcards
Ventricular septal defect
hole between R and L ventricle in ventricular septum
Change in blood flow
increase in pulmonary blood flow, high pressure in L heart, blood shunts to the R, increasing blood flow to the heart/lungs
Characterized by
size, location, number of defects, presence of flap tissue
What type of holes are the easiest to treat
holes in thicker muscle tissue
What does the change in blood flow mean for the lungs
the lungs have to work harder leading to pulmonary HTN, ventricular hypertrophy, HF, valve regurgitation, atrial fibrillation
When is treatment needed
VSD is large, SOB, failure to thrive, enlarging heart chambers, regurgitation, R to L shunt
What meds can be used
diuretics, ACE inhibitors to decrease bp and pressure in the L heart to decrease shunting
Treatment
surgery, catheterization sewing, transplantation with R to L shunting
Murmur?
along L sternal border
