Tetralogy of Fallot Flashcards
Tetralogy of Fallot
type of congenital heart disease that decreases pulmonary blood flow with 4 defects (VSD, pulmonic stenosis, overriding aorta, and R ventricular hypertrophy)
Change in oxygenation
decrease in oxygenated blood coming from the lungs, putting more work on the heart to get blood to the pulmonary system for oxygenation
VSD
opening between R and L ventricle resulting in unoxygenated blood from R side mixing with oxygenated blood from L side being pumped out of the body
Pulmonic stenosis
R ventricle is pumping blood through the stenosis, causing an obstruction of blood flow from the R ventricle to the pulmonary ventricle
Overriding aorta
an enlarged aortic valve receives blood from both ventricles instead of just the L –> pumps unoxygenated blood to the body
R ventricular hypertrophy
increased muscle of R ventricle due to the increased workload the 3 defects put on the heart
Labs
increased hematocrit, hemoglobin, and RBCs
What type of meals
smaller, more frequent to decrease exhaustion
What is a key indicator for needing surgery
cyanosis
Murmur?
loud and harsh caused by the opening between the ventricles
