Chronic hypertension
BP exceeding 140/90 before pregnancy or before 20 weeks gestation on at least 2 occasions
Gestational hypertension
new onset BP exceeding 140/90 in normotensive individuals after 20 weeks of gestation on at least 2 occasions
Preeclampsia
new onset hypertension associated by proteinuria and or maternal organ dysfunction
Proteinuria
> 300mg per 24-hour urine collection or protein creatinine ratio >0.3
1st stage of preeclampsia
vasospasm –> elevated BP –> reduced blood flow
2nd stage of preeclampsia
woman’s response to abnormal placentation when symptoms appear
Effects of preeclampsia on mom and baby
severe symptoms in mom, fetal growth restriction
Management of preeclampsia
bedrest, low-dose aspirin, increase water intake
What is the only cure of preeclampsia
birth of the baby due to presence of trophoblastic tissue in the placenta
Eclampsia
onset of seizure activity in woman with preeclampsia
Management of eclampsia
ABC, lateral position to promote circulation, magnesium sulfate, fetal monitoring
