What is croup
a viral infection (parainfluenza) that causes a bark like cough
Pathophysiology of bark-like cough
inflammation and edema of the larynx, trachea, bronchi –> obstruction
Stridor cause
narrowing of the subglottic area of the trachea
Treatment of stridor
alpha 1 medication
What does edema of the larynx cause
hoarseness
When are symptoms most common
at night
Upper respiratory infection symptoms
nasal flaring, retractions, tachypnea, cyanosis
Where is most management done
at home
Why are single dose corticosteroids used
decrease inflammation
Why is racemic epinephrine used
help relieve mucosal vasoconstriction
When does hospitalization occur
increasing stridor and/or severe contractions
Easy management to help symptoms
keep child upright, humidification, cold air, fluids, rest
What are neck xrays used for
rule out epiglottitis
