Cellular Regulation - Peds Flashcards
Neoplasm
cells that have abnormal proliferation and/or alterations in cellular regulation
Cancer
an alteration in cellular regulation resulting in out of control cellular growth
Tumor
a solid mass/growth of abnormal cells
s/s of cancer
fatigue, pallor, frequent/severe infections, easy bruising, pain from changes in blood cell production that causes compression/infiltration/obstruction from the tumor
what labs are important to monitor
CBC
Common characteristics of childhood cancer
usually affects tissues, often found on accident, very responsive to treatment
What effects cancer spread and treatment in children
cells divide more rapidly
Why is chemo metabolized faster
organs are still developing
What affects can drugs have on bone marrow
cause bone marrow suppression and lower the absolute neutrophil count
antimetabolites
cell-specific chemo that works on specific stages of the cell cycle
alkylating
non cell-specific chemo works on any stage of the cell cycle
Radiation
high dose radiation to damage or kill cancer cells
SE of radiation
fatigue, N/V, oral mucositis, myelosuppression, alterations in skin integrity at the site of radiation
nursing care for skin for radiation
ensure clean and dry skin, do not wash off radiation marking, wear lose fitting clothing, use sunscreen
what to do for dry, sloughing skin from radiation
administer benadryl, hydrocortisone, silvadene
