ARDs (adults) Flashcards
What is ARDs
a pattern of lung changes that leads to patterns of clinical manifestations (not a disease)
What is ARDs caused by
inflammatory injury to the alveolar capillary membrane
Why do alveoli collapse in ARDs
inflammatory infiltrates
s/s of ARDs
productive cough, increase in HR, accessory muscle use, pulmonary edema
What is often used but might not be effective
supplemental oxygen
What type of ventilation is used
positive pressure mechanical ventilation
What side should affected patient lay
left side
What does continuous lateral rotation do
decreases pulmonary complications
What medications are used
corticosteroids, inhaled vasodilators, surfactant replacement (only in infants), vasopressors, sedation, analgesic, neuromuscular blockage
What positioning can increase oxygen
prone
When is prone positioning contraindicated
patients with increased ICP and spinal fractures
Prognosis of ARDs
slow progression of lung repair, symptoms can continue long term
Nursing management outcomes
support pulmonary gas exchange, optimize O2 delivery to body systems, maintain nutritional balance, minimize pain/anxiety/delirium/promote sleep, promote communication/provide family support
