Powers/Uterine contractions Flashcards
What is the primary stimulus powering labor contractions
complete dilation and effacement of the cervix during the first stage of labor
What is the secondary powers
use of intraabdominal pressure exerted by the woman as she pushes and bears down during the second stage of labor, voluntary contractions
Why are periods of relaxation important during contractions
rest for uterine muscles to restore blood flow to the uterus and the placenta
Why are contractions important
responsible for the thinning and dilation of the cervix, then thrusting the presenting part towards the lower uterine segment
Effacement
thinning and shortening of the cervix as the body prepares for delivery
Early labor dilation
0-3cm
Active labor dilation
4-7cm
Transition dilation
8-10cm
3 phases of contractions
increment –> acme –> decrement
