Oxygenation (adults) Flashcards
Lung compliance
the ease at which the lungs can be inflated
Elastin fibers
easily stretched and make lung expansion easy
Collagen fibers
resist stretching and makes lung expansion difficult
Describe emphysema
overstretched lung tissue that causes elastin to lose recoil, allowing the lungs to inflate easily but difficult to deflate
Surfactant
lowers surface tension, increases lung compliance, easy lung inflation
Shunt
blood moves from the right to the left side of circulation without becoming oxygenated
Restrictive pulmonary disease
problems with the inflow of air
What is restrictive pulmonary disease caused by
decrease in the number of functional alveoli
Common outcome of restrictive pulmonary disease
hypoxemia
Obstructive pulmonary disease
problems with the outflow of air
What is obstructive pulmonary disease caused by
air is trapped in alveoli, unable to completely empty before new air enters (CO2 is trapped) –> airway is narrowed
When does cor pulmonale occur
obstructive pulmonary disease
