Tissues Flashcards
describe the structural levels of the human body
cells -> tissue -> organ -> organ system -> human
write a description of each structural level
cells - small structures that perform life’s functions
tissue - are groups of cells
organ - different types of tissues working together
organ system - a group of organs that work together
human - living organism
what are the major groups of tissue
- muscle tissue
- epithelial tissue
- nervous tissue
- connective tissue
what is epithelial tissue
is a covering or lining tissue
epithelial cells are joined very closely together, how and why do they vary in shape?
they vary in shape from thin to flat to column-shaped and cubed shape. They vary in shape to sit in different places.
give three examples of where epithelial tissue can be found
- the outer layer of the skin
- intestines (covered)
- heart (covered)
what does connective tissue provide?
connective tissue provides support for the body and helps to hold all parts together
describe the arrangement of cells in connective tissue
the cells are not close together. they are separated from each other by large amounts of material that is not made up of cells
what is the name of the non-cellular material in the spaces between connective tissue?
matrix
give three examples of connective tissue
- cartilage
- ligaments
- tendonds
describe the shape of muscle cells and how do they react to a stimulus
they are able to respond to a stimulus by contacting and becoming shorter
what are the names of the three types of muscle tissue
- skeletal muscles
- smooth muscles
- cardiac muscles
where is a skeletal muscle found and is it a voluntary or involuntary muscle types
makes up the muscles that are attached to a bone. we have voluntary control over these muscles
what is it meant by the term “involuntary” in involuntary muscle?
muscles that are not under our conscious control
give three examples of where the involuntary muscle tissue can be found in the body
- walls of the stomach and intestines
- walls of the blood
- the iris of the eye
what is the more common name for cardiac muscle
the heart muscle
what is the main function of the cardiac muscle tissue
when heart muscles contract it pumps the blood
is the cardiac muscle involuntary or voluntary
involuntary
what is the special name of the cells that make up the nervous tissue
neurons
why do you think nerve cells have long projections extending from the cell body
so when a neuron is stimulated messages can be carried along these long projections from one part of the body to another
what are three examples of where nervous tissue can be found
- brain
- spinal cord
- nerves
