The digestive system Flashcards
1
Q
What are the two processes of digestion?
A
- extracting nutrients from the food we eat
2. absorbing the nutrients into the body for use by cells
2
Q
Describe the first process of digestion (extracting nutrients from the food we eat)
A
Food is what we consume and nutrients are smaller molecules broken down from the food to be absorbed into the blood and taken into our cells
3
Q
How are foods broken down into nutrients
A
enzymes will break down the food we consume so that the nutrients can be absorbed into our cells
4
Q
what is the alimentary canal
A
- runs from the mouth to the anus
- part of the digestion system (along with the pancreas, liver, gall bladder and salivary gland)
- enzymes break down food into smaller molecules, nutrients during chemical digestion which are absorbed through the lining
- it is structured to carry out basic digestion activities
5
Q
what are the six basic activities of digestion
A
- ingestion of food and water
- mechanical digestion of food
- chemical digestion of food’
- the movement of food along the alimentary canal
- absorption of digested food and water into the blood and lymph
- elimination of material that is not absorbed
