DNA Structure Flashcards
What is the structure of DNA
- Deoxyribonucleic acid
- Found in cells of all organisms
- One molecule of DNA consists of 2 strands of repeating units called nucleotides
- The 2 strands are twisted into a double helix
whay is each strand of DNA coiled around
histones
what occurs in a cell that is not dividing
The coilded DNA forms a newtork called chromatin
what occurs during cell division
The DNA tightly coils into structures called chromosomes
what are genes
Genes are sections of the DNA molecules that will code for a specific protein, which controls a characteristic
what is the gentic code
Is stored information that codes for structures and activities
draw a gentic code

what is a nucleotide
It is made up of sugar, phosphate and nitrogenous base pair. There are four different types of nucleotides depending on what nitrogenous base pair is present
what is a DNA monomer
A monomer is a single molecule that can join to form larger molecules. It is made up of lots of nucleotides joined together
what are the different bases
- Guanine
- Cytosine
- Adenine
- Thymine
what type of bases are adenine and guanine
purine bases
what type of bases are cytosine, thymine and uracil
pyrimidine bases
describe the sugar-phosphate backbones
DNA is a polymer of mononucleotides. Mononucleotides join together between the phosphate of one nucleotide and the deoxyribose group of the adjoining nucleotide
what holds the two stands of the double helix
they are held together by hydrogen bonds between the bases. Hydrogen bonds are singularity very weak but collectively can be strong.
what are the complimentary base pairs? Which base pairs, pair up with which
- adenine pairs with thymine
- guanine pairs with cytosine
