cell metabolism and enzymes Flashcards
what is cell metabolism
is every single chemical reaction happening inside a cell makes up that cells metabolism
what are the two types of chemical reactions
- anabolic reactions
- catabolic reactions
what is a catabolic reaction
a catabolic reaction is when a large molecule is broken down into smaller molecules
what is an example of a catabolic reaction
glucose molecules are broken down to produce energy
draw a labelled diagram of a catabolic reaction
are you right
what is the active site
the active site is where the bond is physically broken by the enzymes. The plus’ and negatives interfere with the bond
what is an anabolic reaction
two small molecules are joined together to form larger molecules
what is an example of an anabolic reaction
amino acids joining together to form proteins
draw a labelled diagram of an anabolic reaction
are you right
what are enzymes dot points
- made out of protein
- act on other substances: substrates
- are specific
- enzymes are involved in the reaction but are not part of it
what are co-factors
- co-factors are non-protein parts of the enzyme
- the co-factor will change the shape of the enzyme thereby increasing the rate of reaction or completing the shape so that the enzyme can react with its specific substrate
what are co-enzymes
organic molecules i.e vitamin B
what is an activating ion
inorganic ions i.e calcium, sodium, magnesium (minerals)
what does denature mean
when an enzyme becomes denatured it changes shape and so no longer fits in the substrate
what is an enzyme in sentence form
it is a protein which speeds up chemical changes without being altered in the process
