arteries, veins and capillaries Flashcards
describe the artery wall
the artery wall is much thicker compared to the walls of veins as blood is coming directly from the heart and must withstand a large amount of pressure
describe the vein wall
the vein wall is much thinner/smaller than artery walls as the pressure of blood passing through is much lower
what do arteries do
carry blood away from the heart
what do veins do
carry blood towards the heart
do arteries have valves
no
do veins have valves
yes, to prevent and stop the backflow of blood. valves keep the blood flowing in the right direction
how do valves work
- blood is pumped past the valves
- due to gravity blood attempts to flow backwards
- this blood is trapped behind these valves
- the heart contracts pumping blood through
Blood is pumped past the valves. Due to gravity, the blood will attempt to flow backwards, however, this blood will get caught behind the valves. The heart contracts pumping blood through releasing the trapped blood and the process continues
structure of capillaries
- capillaries cover alveoli and are one cell thick to allow the gaseous exchange to occur
- capillaries are made up of squamous epithelium
what do capillaries do
are tiny vessels that carry blood between cells
