Structure of bone - long bone Flashcards
what is the diaphysis
Is a shaft making up the main portion of the bone
what is the epiphysis
Is the enlarged ends of the bone. A thin layer of articular cartilage covers each epiphysis
what is the compact bone
A dense form of the bone surrounding the medullary cavity
what is the medullary cavity
Used as a fat storage site and is called the yellow bone marrow as it stores yellow fat.
what is spongy/cancellous bone
Is more porous than compact bone and contains many large spaces filled with marrow. In some bones, this may be a red bone marrow where blood cells are produced
what is the endosteum
Is the inside membrane covering the compact bone
what is the periosteum
Is the dense and white outside membrane of the compact bone
