cellular respiration Flashcards
what is cellular respiration
it is the process by which organic molecules, taken in as food, are broken down in the cells to release energy for the cell’s activities
what is the word equation for cellular respiration
glucose+oxygen -> carbon dioxide+water+heat+energy
what is the symbol equation for cellular respiration
C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O + heat energy + 38ATP
how does energy get to where it is needed
energy moves around the cell as ATP molecules
what is ATP, ADP and P
- adenosine tri phosphate
- adenosine di phosphate
- phosphate
what is ATP made up of (equation - remember arrows)
ADP + P + energy <> ATP
what is the ATP/ADP cycle
Through a catabolic reaction, an enzyme breaks a glucose molecule which forms two pyruvic acids and releases energy. The released energy attaches phosphate to an ADP making it ATP.
what is anaerobic respiration?
Through the process of glycolysis, a glucose molecule is snapped into two pyruvic acids releasing energy. If there is no oxygen then lactic acid molecules will form two ATP molecules.
what is the anaerobic equation
glucose + 2 pyruvic acid molecules > 2 lactic acid molecules + 2ATP
what is aerobic respiration
Pyruvic acid molecules move into the mitochondria where enzymes snap these acid molecules into 6 carbon dioxide and 6 water molecules which forms up to 36 ATP energy molecules.

are you right
what is the process of pyruvic acid being broken down in the mitochondria?
Krebs and electron transport system
where does anaerobic respiration occur
in the cytosol
where does aerobic respiration occur
in the mitochondria
what is synthesis
it is the process of small molecules joining together to form large molecules
