The digestive juices Flashcards
What are the three main digestive system juices
- pancreatic juices
- intestinal juices
- bile
What is the main function of pancreatic juices
Neutralise the acid from the stomach
What does pancreatic juice do
- neutralises HCl
- breaks down starch through pancreatic amylase
- breaks down proteins into peptides through pancreatic protease/trypsin
- breaks down fats to fatty acids and glycerol through pancreatic lipases
Where are intestinal juices secreted from
Secreted by the glands in the small intestine lining
What are the different types of intestinal juices
- Amylase (disaccharides to simple sugars
- Peptidases (peptides to amino acids)
- Lipases (fats/lipids to fatty acids and glycerol)
Where is bile secreted from
From the liver
How much bile is secreted everyday
600 to 1000ml each day
Where is bile stored
The gall bladder
Where does bile enter the small intestine
It enters through the common bile duct
Does bile contain digestive enzymes
No
Why are bile salts important for fat digestion - describe what emulsification is
Emulsify is when bile breaks down fat molecules into globules of fat through mechanical digestion which increases surface area for lipases resulting in chemical digestion
