Cell functions - specific organlles Flashcards
cell membrane
sperates it fome neighbouring cells and the external environment
cytoplasm
fills all the space between the nucleus and cell membrane. It is a thick fluid within the cell membrane and all the structures are suspended in it.
centrioles
Centrioles’ function is to form spindle fibres and pull chromosomes in opposite directions. Involved in the reproduction of the cell.
endoplasmic reticulum
provides a surface on which chemical reactions can occur. the channels between the paired membranes are used for storage or transport of materials
Ribosomes
amino acids join together to make proteins
cytoskeleton
gives the cell its shape and assist the movement of materials, organelles and the whole cell
inclusions
substances that are not part of the cell structure but are found in the cytoplasm
i.e haemoglobin in red blood cells
lysosomes
break down materials that are taken into the cell or break down worn-out organelles
nucleus
- To control chemical reactions within the cytoplasm because the nucleus contains DNA (instructions for cell process)
- stores information needed for cellular divisions
mitochondria
releases energy for the cell through the process of respiration
Golgi body
packages proteins into vesicles for secretion of a cell,
cytosol
- is the liquid part of the cell
- 75-90% water
what is the difference between the smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum
the smooth endoplasmic reticulum has no ribosomes attached to it but with the rough endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes are attached.
