2
Q

what does an individual bi lipid consist of

A

They have a phospholipid head which is hydrophilic meaning they love water.

They have a phospholipid tail which is hydrophobic meaning they dislike water.

They both consist of fat and phosphate

Q

what does the carrier protein do

A

allows larger molecules to be transported into the cell

i.e glucose

Q

concentration gradients

A

a concentration gradient occurs when the concentration of particles is high in one area and lower in another

Q

concentration gradient in passive transport

A

particles will diffuse down a concentration gradient from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.

this does not require energy

Q

what are the four main functions of the cell membrane

A
  1. the cell membrane separates the cell from neighbouring cells and protects the cell from the external environment.
  2. the cell membrane is selectively permeable meaning it determines what passes in and out the cell.
  3. the cell membrane provides internal support the cell membrane is joined with microfilaments which are a part of the cytoskeleton.
  4. the cell membrane is sensitive meaning it is the first part of the cell to be affected by any changes
