breathing processes and mechanics Flashcards
what is breathing
is the process of moving air into and from the lungs to facilitate gas exchange with the internal environment. exchange carbon dioxide for oxygen.
what is inspiration
is the process of taking air into the lungs
what is expiration
is the process of breathing out
what is respiration
the exchange of gases between the atmosphere, blood and body cells of organisms.
the process of inspiration (long answer)
air must be below atmospheric pressure for air to flow into the lungs. The diaphragm contracts and flattens and intercostal muscles contract to increase lung volumes to reduce air pressure. The rib cage moves up and out.
the process of expiration (long answer)
The diaphragm arches more into the chest cavity and intercostal muscles relax, and the ribs move down and in reducing lung volume. The air pressure in the lungs is higher than the air pressure outside the body, pushing air out of the body.
what is respiratory surface
is the area where gaseous exchange occurs. a good respiratory surface should have a high surface area and be in contact with many blood capillaries to allow gaseous exchange.
