things affecting perception Flashcards
Hudson’s study: aim
Find out if different people from different cultures interpreted information from different pictures differently
Hudson’s procedure:
He showed 2D drawings to people from different cultures and educated backgrounds, drawings showed and antelope, man with a spear
Hudson’s: findings
Both black and white schooled participants were most likely to perceive depth than unschooled participants
white schooled participants were more likely to perceive depth than black schooled participants
Hudson’s conclusion:
results say that cultural differences affect perceptual set because people from different cultures use depth cues differently when perceiving 2d drawings
weaknesses of Hudson’s study
One weakness of research with people from different cultures is that tasks and instructions might not make sense to them
Hudson weakness of study: explain
Language barrier between the researcher and the participants. researchers rely on translators and it may not be translated correctly
Hudson: problems with method
some of the participants were confused with the 2d drawings, some people had never seen paper before
McGinnis study: aim
Wanted to know whether things that cause us anxiety are less likely to be noticed than things that are emotionally neutral
McGinnis study: procedure
Eight male and eight female students made up the participants and they were shown a series of flashcards some of the words were neutral some caused an emotional reaction
McGinnis: results
He found that participants took longer to recognise the offensive words than the neutral words
McGinnis: conclusion
This study suggests that emotion is a factor of perceptual set
McGinnis: point
One strength of this study is that it used an object measurement of emotion
McGinnis: explain
Many studies are limited because they are based on self-report methods. Do not use participants opinions as they may be biased
McGinnis: Weakness: point
One weakness is that delayed recognition may be more to do with embarrassment than defence
McGinnis: weakness: explanation
The longer time taken to identify taboo words in the McGinnis study has been explained by the perceptual system “ Blocking out the emotional content of the words” The participants hesitated in giving there responses because they felt embarrassed and they were uncomfortable repeating rude words in a research study
Gilcheist and Nesburg: motavation
Find out what effect food would have on perception with food related images 🥙🥘
Gilchrist:procedure
26 undergraduates volunteered to go without food for 20 hours. They were shown 4 slides of a meal 🍆. Each of them were shown for 15 seconds, they were shown (steak, fries, chicken, hamburger, spagetti) projector got turned off and was dimmed
Gilchrist: results
Food deprived participants said they perceived the picture lighter than they were
Burner and minter: aim
Interested to see whether expectation is an important factor in perceptual set
Burner and minter: procedure
Participants were shown sequences of letters, the group that saw the sequence as numbers were more likely to report the ambiguous as number 13. When participants were asked to draw the people that saw number dre number 13 and the people that drew letters drew b
