Ingestion, digestion, absorption, elimination
What is ingestion ?
Eating your food
What is digestion ?
digestion is where biomolecule polymers are broken down
What happens in absorbsion ?
All of this is absorbed
What happens in elimination ?
Anything that was not digested from the body will be removed
What does your mouth do?
it realises saliva which contains enzymes with breaks down the food, chemical digestion and mechanical digestion takes place
Why is slaliva helpful ?
Contains enzymes, it counteracts the acidity in your mouth, saliva can also prevent tooth decay
What does your tounge do ?
Help shape food into a bolus
What is the epiglottis ?
blocks trachea during act of swallowing food
What is parastaltis?
wave like movements that happens oesophagus that helps move the food
How much can an adult stomach store?
2l of food and liquid
What does acids in stomach include ?
hydrochloric acid, enzymes
What leaves the stomach?
Chyme
What happens in small intestines?
chemical digestion of carbs, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids
What can be absorbed?
glucose, fructose, amino acids
