Giant covalent structures part 2 Flashcards
What are giant covalent structures made of ?
huge number of non metal atoms
What is the repetition of there structure called ?
Regular repeating lattices
What are some examples of giant molecular structures ?
Graphite, diamond , silicon dioxide
What do we have to remember about the structures ?
High melting and boiling point , very strong , donβt conduct electricity
How is the diamond structure made ?
Each carbon atom is covalently bonded to 4 other carbon atoms
What are the properties of diamond ?
Very strong and have a high melting point and cannot conduct electricity
How is graphite structured ?
Bonded to three other carbon atoms and are arranged in hexagons
What is graphites propeties ?
It is very soft , high melting point
Why is graphite different ?
Each carbon atom usually has 4 bonds but carbon has 3 which means it has a spare electron and the electron becomes delocalised which allows it to conduct electricity
