Eye contact Flashcards
Who was the person that conducted the two way mirror study?
Adam Kedon( 1967)
What are the uses of eye contact?
keep the flow of conversation to give them back information on how they are feeling about the topic
What did Adam Kedon do during this study?
Involved paires of participants being watched through a two way mirror
What did Adam kedon find out?
That eye contact can encourage turn taking of speaking during a conversation , speakers looked away when they were going to speak ans had eye contact when they finished talking signalling “it’s my turn to talk” and “it’s your turn to talk” if this did not happen there would be a pause within the conversation
What is the first thing we do to signal attraction?
Use eye contact- whern signalling attract from a distance we do this to “check someone out “ and eye contact also may increase when we are talking to someone up closer that we like
Who conducted the study to see whether people are more attractive when using eye contact?
Claire Conway(2007)
What did claire conway find out?
That people are more attracted to someone when they maintain more eye contact
What did they do during this study?
Several students were shown pictures of females and males looking straight at them or away from them
What were the results of this study- Adam kedon ?
The photos that were mantaining eye contact were all considered more attractive even if the face was showing a negative expression
What did conway conclude
Eye contact is an evolutionary behaviour that signals attraction of a potential mate
What do people also use eye contact for?
to express the intensity of the emotion
Who conducted the study to show how intense certain emotions were?
Renoild adam’s and Robert Kleck in 2005
What did they do within this study
Gave particpants pictures of faces showing emotions like fear, joy, sadness, anger- some were directly looking at them others were looking the others away - partcipants judged how strong the emotions were
What did robert Kleck and Renoild adam conclude?
emotions that were most intense looking at the person- joy, anger and not looking fear and sadness
What does this suggest about REnoild adams and robert klecks study
