Deforestation Flashcards
What do we use land for?
Building,quarrying,farming and dumping waste
What does it mean when we use this land up?
There ends up being less space for the organisms
What does destroying peat bogs do?
It adds more C02 to the atmosphere
What are bogs?
Areas of land that are acidic and waterlogged
What do the plants that live in bogs do?
They do not fully decay when they die because of lack of oxygen. Plants build up to form peat, so carbon is stored within the peat instead of going into the atmosphere
What do humanβs do to peat bogs?
They are often drained to ne used as farm land or peat is cut up and used for fuel or for compost, peat is being used faster than it forms
What does it do when peat bogs are drained?
They come into contact with are and some microorganisms start to decompose it
What do the microorganisms do?
They respire which uses oxygen and gives out carbon dioxide
- Carbon dioxide is also released as the peat is burned when using fuel
Why can destroying the bogs be harmful?
It can ruin the habitat for some animals and plants and microorganisms so it will reduce biodiversity
What is there less of being taken in when deforestation takes place?
Carbon dioxide
When can carbon dioxide also be released?
When the trees are burnt and when microorganisms feed on pieces of dead wood
What can deforestation also cause?
Biodiversity which is the variety of different species
