electrolysis Flashcards
what equipment should we use for experiment?
beaker
what is an electrolyte?
liquid or solution that contains an ionic compound- ions are free moving
what are elctrodes?
solid conductors
what electrode goes on the right?
anode
what electrode goes on left?
cathode- negative
what do we have to do to the electrodes?
join these with a wire and add a power supply so electrons can flow and drive flow of electrons
what does electrolysis mean ?
splitting up with electricty
what will be attracted to the anode?
the negative ions and when they get there they will be discharged and bromine atoms can pair up to form bromine gas
what are positive ions attracted to?
cathode and will become discharged which will form to bottom which will form a molten layer of lead
what is happening to the ions at the cathode?
being reduced
oxidised meaning?
losing electrons the lose 1 at the anode
reduced mean?
gain electrons
what are the electrons at the anode doing?
being passed onto the anode and flowing along the wire to the cathode using battery and these are being given to the cathode and adding two electrons turning it to pure neutral lead
what happens during electrolysis summary?
using electricity to convert ions in a compound into pure forms by transfering to negative ions to positive
