Strength dividing long term memory into different types is that brains scans have shown separate locations in brain for the types of memory, supporting these ideas- Episodic is the right prefrontal area- Semantic left prefrontal area- Procedural is processed with the motor area which controls the motor skills
Another strength of this is amnesia patients like Clive wearing because of brain damage only lost a few types of his memory which supports this idea of different types of memory. There was a boy that had epilepsies and they had to remove his hippocampus which resulted in memory loss, but did not lose all of his memory and he could recall certain types of events, which shows the different types of memory
A weakness is that, there is not a clear difference between episodic and semantic memory, amnesia patients retain some of there semantic memories and episodic memories are linked together, which means the idea could be to simplistoc
