Covalent bonding Flashcards
What happens when non-metal atoms bond together ?
They share pairs of electrons to make covalent bonds, atoms only share electrons in there outer shell
How many extra electrons to atoms get for each single covalent bond ?
1, each atom makes enough covalent bonds to fill up it’s outer shell, which makes them very stable
What do dot and cross diagrams show ?
Electrons shown in the overlap between two atoms are shared electrons , they show which atoms in the electrons in a covalent bond come from , they don’t show how the atoms are arranged or how big they are compared to each other
What do displayed formula’s show ?
The covalent bonds as single lines between atoms , if there’s a single covalent bond there is one line , if there is double there is two lines , good for showing how atoms are connected in large molecules , but do not show 3D structure and don’t show which atoms in an electron in the covalent bond have come from
What do 3D models show ?
How the atom’s in the covalent bond are arranged
