Ionic bonding Flashcards
What happens when metals and non-metals react together ?
The metal atoms lose electrons to positively charged ions
What happens to the non-metals during this process?
The non metals gain the electrons to form negatively charged ions
What happens to the oppositely charged ions ?
The become strongly attracted by an electrostatic force, which is called an ionic bond
What do dot and cross diagrams show ?
They show how electrons are arranged in an atom or an ion and it shows which atom the electrons in an ion came from
What happens to sodium chloride during this process ?
Sodium loses an outer shell electron, and forms an NA + ion. Chlorine gains the electron which forms a CL- ion
What happens with magnesium oxide ?
Magnesium loses two outer shell electrons and forms and MG2+ ion, The oxygen atom gains these electrons forming a 02- ion
What happens to magnesium chloride within this process ?
The magnesium loses to outer shell electrons and forms an MG2+ ion and the two chlorine atoms gain an electron each which forms two Cl- ions
