Mettalic bonding Flashcards
What happens in metallic bonding ?
electrons from the outer shell are free to move around which means they are delocalised
What happens when loads of atoms are in a metal together ?
They share there electrons and they are free to move and they become positive ions
What happens after this ?
There is strong electrostatic attraction between positive ions and the negative electrons
What does the metallic bond do ?
Gives the metal itβs strength, high melting and boiling point , They are malleable, good conductors because the electrons can carry electrical current
Why is metal malleable ?
The different metals can slide over each other
What are alloys ?
Something that contains two ore more different elements
How are they made ?
By mixing together two different metals but they need to have different sized atoms which disrupts the metals structure so the layers cannot slide over one another
