Giant covalent structures Flashcards
1
Q
What happens in giant covalent structures ?
A
They are bonded together with strong covalent bonds
2
Q
What are there properties ?
A
High melting and boiling points, lot’s of energy needed to break the bonds, can’t conduct electricity
3
Q
What are examples of giant covalent structures ?
A
Diamond, graphite, silicon dioxide
4
Q
What happens in diamond ?
A
Each carbon atom forms four covalent bonds, diamond is really hard, has high melting point , can’s conduct electricity as no free moving electrons
5
Q
What does graphite contain ?
A
Layers of carbon atoms which are arranged in a hexagon
6
Q
How many bonds does graphite have ?
A
