Where is the brain stem located?
Located near the top of the spinal chord
Autonomic functions
Heartbeat, breathing, sleeping, eating can be controlled by the autonomic nervous system - called autonomic because it is automatic
What is the most highly developed part of the brain at birth?
Brain stem, rest of the brain develops through infancy
What is the least mature part of the brain?
cerebellum
Where is the Thalamus located?
Deep inside the brain
What does the cerebellum mean?
Little brain
What role does the cerebellum play?
Plays the role in coordination and movement, also coordinates sensory information with motor activity- called sensorimotor
What does the cerebellum have some impact on?
Language and emotions
How many thamulsβs are there
2 of them- one in the right half one on the left half
How can you see the Thamulus?
If you cut your brain in half, it is the same size and shape as a walnut
What does the Thalumus receive?
Sensory signals from the retina in the eye and sends the signals onto the visual area where the visual info is processed
What does the Thamalus also do?
Coordinates motor signals, sending information from the motor area to the body
What is the cortex divided into?
Two halfβs(or hemispheres) each has similar structures
What is the cortex?
The outer covering of the brain- it is thin but it is folded- it is like a tea cosy-3mm thick-found in mammals
Where does thinking take place?
In the frontal cortex
