What is a giant cell tumour of the tendon sheath?

A

This is a benign nodular tumour of unknown aetiology, found on the tendon sheath of the hands and feet

Describe the histology of giant cell tumours of the tendon sheath

A

Benign regenerative hyperplasia with reactive proliferation (Inflammation)

How do giant cell tumours of the nerve sheath present?

A

They present as firm, discreet swellings, usually on the volar aspect of the digits

They may or may not be tender

How are giant cell tumours of the tendon sheath managed?

A

If there is no functional issue, they can be left alone

Otherwise, they are treated by excision and rarely recur

Describe the pathology of pigmented villonodular synovitis

A

These have a similar histology to giant cell tumours of the tendon sheath, however, they commonly affect the larger joints and are most likely to recur
