What is bursitis?
Bursitis is the inflammation of the synovium lines sacs that protect bony prominences and joints
What are some possible complications of bursitis?
Infection
Abscess formation
What are some possible locations of bursitis?
- Trochanteric bursitis
- Olecranon bursitis
- Patellar bursitis
What are the 4 regions of bursae (And therefore bursitis) surrounding the patellar?
- Supra-patellar bursitis
- Pre-patellar bursitis
- Infra-patellar bursitis
- Pes anserinus bursitis
What’re the most common causes of bursitis?
Repeated pressure
Repeated trauma
What causes tochanteric bursitis?
Iliotibial band tracking over the trochanteric bursa
Who are most at risk of trochonteric bursitis?
- Young runners
- Older patients (May be linked to gluteal cuff syndrome)
How will patients with trochanteric bursitis present?
Patients will usually present with pain on the lateral aspect of the hip, with pain on palpation of the greater trochanter
How is trochanteric bursitis diagnosed?
Clinical examination and history
What are some management options for trochanteric bursitis?
- Analgesia
- NSAIDs
- Physiotherapy
- Steroid injections
