Knee dislocation Flashcards
Who is most likely to suffer a knee dislocation?
Teenagers
Females
What at the 6 possible directions of knee dislocation?
- Posterior
- Anterior
- Medial
- Lateral
- Medial rotatory
- Lateral rotatory
How may knee dislocation present?
There may be spontaneous relocation, but it is not a diagnosis to be missed, so lateral colateral ligament injury and a peroneal nerve injury should be assumed to be a knee dislocation
What are some possible complications of knee dislocation?
There is a risk of damage to the popliteal artery, leading to tearing or thrombosis, common fibular nerve (Peroneal) injury and compartment syndrome
This can also lead to ligamentous laxity and arthrofirbosis and stiffness
What investigation is used in suspected vascular injury due to knee dislocation?
Arteriogram and MRI
How is ligamentous stability examined in knee dislocation?
Under anaesthetic
How are knee dislocations managed?
Urgent management is required with reduction under sedation
When is surgical reduction indicated in knee dislocation?
If the condyle has button-holed through the capsule
How quickly should surgical repair be performed in vascular an nerve repair in knee dislocation?
Within 6 hours
What is definitive surgical treatment of knee dislocation?
Sequential ligamentous repair
