Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis (SCFE) Flashcards
What is SCFE?
SCFE is Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis, a condition where the femoral head epiphysis slips inferiorly in relation to the femoral neck
What is another name for SCFE?
It is also known as Slipped Upper Femoral Epiphysis (SUFE).
What is the main cause of SCFE?
CFE is thought to be caused by micro-trauma to the physis
Name some factors that increase the risk of SCFE.
- Age 8-18, pubertal growth
- Overweight
- African-Americans
- Endocrine/metabolic conditions (e.g., hyperthyroidism, renal disease)
What are the common symptoms of SCFE?
Symptoms include hip pain, groin pain, thigh pain, knee pain, and an antalgic gait (limp).
What can be observed during examination of a patient with SCFE?
Examination reveals a shorter lower limb when externally rotated, loss of internal rotation, and deep flexion. There is also pain at extreme ranges of movement.
What is the main form of investigation for SCFE?
The main form of investigation is an x-ray with AP and lateral views.
What is the recommended treatment for SCFE?
Urgent surgery is required to pin the femoral head to prevent further slippage. The degree of slip affects the prognosis, with some cases requiring hip replacement.
